appearances

Written by Kevin Sharpe | Pastor at Westbrook Community Church:

We live in a society that puts so much weight on our outward appearance.  What we look like, what we wear, what we drive. It is everywhere.  And it is not only the culture; it is just so easy for me to focus on the outward appearance only.  It is also my tendency to go there first.

For our 5th anniversary as a church, I made a video with Joel Johnson (Senior Pastor of Westwood Church) that they were going to show in the Westwood service while Joel was coming to our church to speak.  We shot the video in late August and then a couple of weeks later, it was done and they sent me a link.  I watched the link and I’d like to say that my first thought was about the content or how it would be received at Westwood or how it would impact our church.  None of those were my first thoughts.  My first thought was, “I look skinnier than I usually do on video.”  I told my wife and she shared that with my daughter. My daughter watched the video and said “… and you look a lot less bald than you usually do in videos.”  Children are such a joy, aren’t they?!

In 1 Samuel 16:7, God says this to Samuel when Samuel was going to anoint the next king of Israel: “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I want to grow in not looking only at the outward appearance of people, but knowing and focusing on their hearts.
